To start a flame with a single spark...

So recently I've been disturbed at the lack of compassion that the people of modern day feel for others. I find it alarming that we only care about ourselves when there is so much more important things going on.
Do you know who Pastor Saeed Abedini is? He's an American pastor who has been held in an Iranian prison for 3 years now, with no contact with his parents, wife, or children. He's being beaten and tortured with no hospital care. His only crime is that he's a Christian.
Did you know that there is an estemate of 27 million slaves around the world today? And did you know that almost 18,000 are trafficked through America each year?
There are children being exploited for pleasure or profit, kids as young as 8 fighting for their lives in a war they have no part of, Christians being crucified by Isis. And what are we doing about it?
It's all well and good to say you're doing something, liking pages on Facebook devoted to abolition or other good causes, praying that there will be an end, but why do you think your job is done there?
James 2: 15 - 17 says:
"If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it doesn't have works, is dead."
What this says to me is that if we pray our hardest and say the right things, educate people about the issues but we are doing nothing else, our faith is no good.
It's fine to call yourself a Christian, go to church every Sunday, and do the things expected of you as a Christian but if that's all you are doing, do you really think it's God's work? Are you shining the light of Christ by hoping someone else will come along and do the work?
Not all of us are called to the same thing. My calling is abolition. My friend's calling is abolition too, but in Uganda. I haven't been called to Uganda, but does that mean I shouldn't be making a difference? Not at all! I should be doing as much as I can to fufill my calling the way God has set out for me to do.
And you all have a calling too. Don't worry if you don't know what it is yet, God will show you when it's time. But until you do know, don't be blind to the suffering of others. Don't live your life thinking everything's fine; because it isn't.
Stand up, step out of your comfort zone, defy the norm of our culture, and start to make a difference.
Thanks!
Bethany
